Horticulture New Zealand - magazine designs

Brief
Horticulture New Zealand produces two monthly magazines that play a vital role in communicating to their sector.

Our brief was to refresh the design of each magazine, so they are more contemporary and engaging, and raise the profile of the great work Horticulture NZ does for the sector. They also tell the many and varied stories of all the great things happening in the horticulture sector, the challenges growers are facing, and provide information to help them deal with regulatory and compliance matters.

Approach
Designing magazines takes a different approach to designing other one-off documents. We created a robust design system that is not only appealing to look at and engaging to read, but makes it easy to produce a lengthy document in a short amount of time.

We also wanted the magazines to be like sisters – different personalities, but still part of the same family. We’ve streamlined the process by having working meetings with the client at an early stage, to minimise changes, stress levels and reduce the chance of errors at the 11th hour!

Results
The process has become much smoother, and both magazines have now undergone a major transformation.

They are now more engaging reads – inviting the reader to take more time and delve into them in greater detail.

The ads also benefit from a less cluttered layout, and the response from advertisers has been very positive.
